This is a late 19th to early 20th century Navajo pictorial rug woven entirely in native hand spun wool in natural ivory, dark brown, hand carded gray, and hand dyed aniline red. The design features two stacked stepped diamonds in ivory, each with a humanoid figure with arms outstretched at center. The design field is surrounded by a border of stepped bands in ivory and dark brown along each side, and brown and red at bottom, all on a gray field. This weaving is published in "Navajo Pictorial Weaving 1880-1950" by Tyrone Campbell, page 39. Provenance: ex American Hurrah Collection. Purchased in Shiprock, NM in 1904.
